Description

58 mm Is Not the Cheap Version of 80 mm

Buyers often treat the 58 mm printer as a budget substitute for the 80 mm unit. It is not. The two formats solve different problems: 80 mm gives you a full itemised receipt with a logo and a tax block, and it needs a counter to sit on. 58 mm gives you a short ticket in a small footprint, and it can run from a battery or a tablet over Bluetooth.

The POS-5890A is the counter version of that idea: 90 mm/s thermal printing at 384 dots per line, 57.5 mm paper, a 50 mm roll, paper-out detection, USB and Bluetooth interfaces, and a 12 V / 1 A cash drawer port in a 120 × 105 × 102 mm body.

What a 58 mm Ticket Is Actually For

  • Single-item and beverage service. A coffee or a bubble tea does not need a 20-line receipt. A short ticket with the order number, the item and the modifiers is faster to print, faster to read and cheaper per slip.
  • Order numbers and queue tickets. The number is the whole document. Printing it on 58 mm stock with a bold font gives a slip that stands up in a holder.
  • Kitchen and bar tickets. Where the ticket is read once, by a cook, and thrown away — no logo, no tax block, no customer copy.
  • Mobile and pop-up counters. A 58 mm printer plus a tablet is a complete till that fits in a bag. This is why the Bluetooth option exists on this model.
  • Vouchers, tickets and tokens. Short, high-contrast, on cheap stock.

The trade-off: 32 characters per line at Font A, 42 at Font B, 16 Chinese characters. If the receipt has to explain a basket of fourteen items with tax breakdowns, 58 mm produces a long ribbon of paper and 80 mm is the correct format. Choosing 58 mm to save money on a full-service retail counter is a false economy — the cashier spends the difference in time.

90 mm/s and a 50 km Print Head: The Maintenance Math

The rated thermal print head life is 50 km. At a typical 15 cm per ticket that is roughly 330,000 tickets, or about three years for a site printing 300 tickets a day. That is the number to plan against when this printer is going into a chain: it tells you when heads start failing, and it tells you whether to hold spares centrally or per store.

90 mm/s is slower than an 80 mm counter printer at 260 mm/s, and that is fine for the format. A 58 mm ticket is short; the absolute time difference on a 15 cm slip is a fraction of a second. Where it does matter is a site printing multi-page order tickets — in that case the format is wrong, not the speed.

Because the head is a wear item, three habits extend its life and are worth training: never print without paper (the head runs dry and scores), clean the head with isopropyl and a non-abrasive wipe weekly in high-volume sites, and use paper within its specified thickness of 0.06–0.08 mm rather than whatever is cheapest.

Bluetooth, USB and the iOS Question

The unit offers USB and Bluetooth. USB is the fixed-counter case: plug into the terminal or a hub, and it behaves like any ESC/POS printer with drivers for Windows, Linux, macOS and OPOS.

Bluetooth is where buyers get caught. Bluetooth printing on Android works through the standard SPP profile with most POS apps. iOS does not support SPP for printing — an iPad or iPhone needs either a Bluetooth printer that speaks a supported profile through the app’s own SDK, or a network printer. If your deployment is iPad-based and you want 58 mm Bluetooth, confirm the app’s supported printer list before ordering. This is the single most common mismatch we see in mobile POS projects.

For fixed counters, use USB. It is faster, it never drops a pairing, and it charges nothing to the battery of whatever is driving it.

The Details That Decide Whether a Cheap Printer Is Actually Cheap

Paper-out detection. The printer reports when the roll is finished, so the POS can hold the job instead of printing a blank slip and losing the order. On a busy counter, a blank slip means a re-keyed order.

Manual tear-off. There is no auto cutter on this model, which is what keeps the body small and the cost low. The trade-off is a torn edge and the need for a straight tear bar — fine for beverage and kitchen tickets, less so for a customer-facing receipt that should look finished.

Roll size. A 50 mm diameter roll is compact; it also means more frequent changes than an 83 mm roll. On a site printing a few hundred short tickets a day, that is a once-a-shift task, not an hourly one.

Cash drawer port. 12 V / 1 A on this model, which means a 58 mm printer can drive a drawer in a small-format setup — a food truck or a market stall with no room for a full counter.

Character sets. Font A at 12 × 24 for 32 characters per line, Font B at 9 × 17 for 42, and 24 × 24 Chinese at 16 characters per line. If the ticket mixes scripts, check the line width against the actual template rather than assuming.

The Other 58 mm Models

  • POS-5890U is the USB-only version of the same platform. If you never need Bluetooth, it is the cheaper and simpler specification — one less pairing step in every deployment.
  • POS-5811 is the portable, battery-powered unit for field and mobile use, where there is no mains outlet at all.
  • POS-5816 is the 58 mm label variant, for price labels and small stickers rather than receipts.

For a fixed counter that occasionally needs a slip, the 5890A with Bluetooth gives flexibility for a small premium; for a pure fixed deployment, the USB version is the honest choice.

Where the 5890A Fits

  • Cafés, tea shops and bars — short order tickets and order numbers.
  • Food trucks and market stalls — tablet plus Bluetooth plus a 12 V drawer.
  • Kitchens and pass-through stations — single-copy tickets, no logo, no waste.
  • Small retail with a compact counter — where an 80 mm printer physically will not fit.
  • Not for full retail receipts. If the customer takes the receipt home and it has to carry a tax breakdown, use an 80 mm unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it print from an iPhone or iPad?

Not over Bluetooth SPP — iOS does not support that profile for printing. Use a printer the app supports through its own SDK, or a network model. Confirm with your app vendor before ordering.

Does it cut the paper?

No, it tears off against a tear bar. There is no auto cutter on this model.

Can it drive a cash drawer?

Yes, through the 12 V / 1 A drawer port, triggered by an ESC/POS command. Match the drawer’s rated voltage.

What paper does it take?

57.5 ± 0.5 mm thermal roll, 50 mm diameter, 0.06–0.08 mm thick.

Does it work with OPOS?

Yes — drivers are provided for Windows, Linux, macOS and OPOS, which covers most Windows POS software.

How long does the print head last?

50 km rated. At 15 cm per ticket that is around 330,000 tickets, so plan replacement against the site’s volume rather than against the calendar.

Next step: tell us the ticket type (receipt, order number, kitchen ticket), the device driving it (Windows terminal, Android tablet, iPad) and the paper you plan to use — we will confirm the interface and quote factory-direct. Email sales@dcapos.com or contact us.
