An 80 mm printer is the default at a till because receipts are long and lines are long. A 58 mm printer makes sense when neither is true — a coffee counter with three items per receipt, a kiosk with a short order slip, a ticket window, a service desk that prints a queue number.
The POS-5890U is that printer: 58 mm direct thermal at 203 dpi and 70 mm/s, USB and Bluetooth, mains powered at DC 8.5 V / 2 A, no auto cutter, and 50 km of rated print head life. It is the smallest and cheapest way to put a receipt in a customer’s hand at a fixed position.
This unit has no auto cutter, and that is a decision rather than a saving. It is worth being explicit about what it costs and what it buys.
What it costs: the receipt is torn against a tear bar, by hand. That is one extra motion per transaction, and it needs a bar with a proper edge — a worn or plastic bar tears at an angle and leaves the receipt ragged, which looks careless to a customer.
What it buys: a motorised cutter is the most common mechanical failure in a small receipt printer. It adds weight, adds a part that jams on misaligned paper, and adds a component whose replacement usually means replacing the printer. Removing it removes the failure mode.
For a low-volume position — a coffee counter doing 200 receipts a day — the tear bar is entirely adequate and the reliability gain is real. For a busy till doing 600, the extra motion costs more than the cutter would, and an 80 mm printer with a full or partial cutter is the better answer.
USB and Bluetooth together is an unusual pairing on a mains-powered printer, and it is more useful than it first appears.
The caveats are the same as any Bluetooth printer: pairing is per device, throughput limits how much data can be sent per receipt, and a room full of 2.4 GHz devices is where drops happen. For a fixed till with a PC, USB is still the better connection — one cable for power and data, nothing to pair.
The unit carries a data buffer of up to 50 KB. On a 70 mm/s printer that is a meaningful amount of queued work: it means the host can send a job and be free before the printer has finished, instead of blocking while the paper advances.
This matters most when the printer is shared or when receipts are printed in bursts — a restaurant sending four order slips at once, a ticket window printing a batch at the start of a session. A printer without a buffer makes the application wait, and on a slow Bluetooth link that wait is visible to the customer.
The extension character sheet list covers PC437 (standard Europe), Katakana, PC850 (multilingual), PC860 (Portuguese), PC863 (Canadian) and PC865 (Nordic), and the character size specification includes a 24 × 24 dot mode for Traditional Chinese alongside the standard 12 × 24 Latin font.
That combination is what makes the unit usable outside a Latin-only market: a receipt can carry accented European characters, katakana or CJK text without the host having to send a bitmap for every character. If your deployment prints in a language where the characters are not in the basic ASCII set, confirm the code page your software selects — this is the specification that decides whether a receipt reads correctly or shows boxes.
203 dpi at 70 mm/s on 57.5 ± 0.5 mm paper, about 32 characters per line at the standard font. The print head is rated at 50 km, which is the wear figure: at a typical 12 cm receipt that is over 400,000 receipts before the head reaches its rating.
Drivers are listed for Windows 2003 through 10 and Linux, with iOS and Android supported for Bluetooth printing. Certification covers FCC, CE, RoHS and ISO, and the warranty is one year.
Power is DC 8.5 V / 2 A from an external adapter — note the 8.5 V, not the 5 V or 24 V used elsewhere in this range. A mismatched adapter is the most common way one of these units dies, and the connector is often physically compatible.
No. Receipts are torn against the tear bar. That removes the most common mechanical failure in a small printer, at the cost of one manual motion per receipt.
Yes, over Bluetooth. Confirm the app supports ESC/POS Bluetooth printing.
DC 8.5 V / 2 A. This is specific to the model — do not substitute a 5 V or 24 V adapter, even if the plug fits.
57.5 ± 0.5 mm thermal roll, roughly 32 characters per line at the standard font.
Yes — a 24 × 24 dot character mode and Katakana are supported, alongside the standard European code pages. Confirm the code page your software selects.
One year. FCC, CE, RoHS and ISO certified.
Next step: tell us the receipt length and daily volume, whether the host is a PC or a tablet, and the language the receipt prints in — we will confirm the configuration and quote factory-direct. Email sales@dcapos.com or contact us.
