When the Till Has to Leave the Counter

A fixed POS terminal assumes the customer comes to it. That assumption fails in four situations: the queue is longer than the counter, the order is taken at the table, the stock count happens in the aisle, and the ticket has to be checked at a gate. In each case the work moves and the hardware has to move with it.

The DCA-H62 is a handheld Android terminal built for those four cases: a 5.5-inch HD IPS touchscreen, a 58 mm thermal printer in the body, a 5 MP autofocus camera for 1D and 2D codes, 4G with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a 5000 mAh battery in a 358 g IP54 housing.

What the Built-In Printer Changes

Most handheld terminals are scanners with a screen. The H62 prints. That single feature decides which workflows it fits:

• Table-service restaurants. The order is entered at the table and the guest check prints there, so the kitchen ticket and the customer’s copy come from the same device. No walk back to a counter printer, no handwritten duplicate.
• Ticketing and admissions. A ticket printed at the gate is a ticket the guest holds immediately — which is what a venue needs when the queue is the constraint, not the transaction.
• Delivery and field collection. A receipt printed on the spot, handed over at the door, with the payment recorded on the same device.
• Pop-up and event counters. A complete till in one hand: scan, take payment, print, done. No counter, no cabling, no second printer.

The trade-off is honest: a printer in the body adds weight and consumes battery. At 358 g with the battery fitted it is comfortable in a hand for a shift, but it is not a featherweight scanner. And print volume is the variable that decides whether a 5000 mAh battery covers a full shift — a site printing 200 receipts a day will want a spare battery or a charging cradle, while a site printing 30 will not think about it.

Android 8.1 or Android 11 — This Is the Decision, Not a Detail

Both builds are available, and they are not interchangeable for every customer:

• Android 8.1.0 ships with Google Play services. That matters if your application depends on Google Play Services, Google Maps, Firebase push, or if you simply need to install apps from the Play Store on the device. Many commercial POS apps and MDM agents fall into this category.
• Android 11.0 ships without Google Play. Newer platform, newer security patches, and the right choice where the application is side-loaded, where the deployment is locked to a single kiosk-mode app, or where a customer’s IT policy does not allow Google services on commercial hardware.

Ask the question before you order, not after: does the app need Google Play Services? If yes, take 8.1. If no, take 11 for the newer platform. Getting this backwards is the most expensive mistake in a handheld order, because it is not fixable in the field.

Performance: What 1 GB of RAM Actually Supports

The H62 runs a MediaTek MT6739 quad-core Cortex-A7 at 1.5 GHz with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. That is a deliberately modest platform, and it is adequate for exactly one job at a time:

• Fine: a single POS or order-entry app, barcode scanning, a 58 mm print job, a 4G sync. This is the designed use.
• Fine: a stock-count or asset-tracking app that scans and syncs in batches.
• Not fine: a browser with several tabs, a video call, a heavy ERP client, or a workflow that keeps three apps in memory. 1 GB will start closing applications, and a POS app that gets killed mid-transaction is a support ticket.

If your workflow needs more headroom, say so at quotation stage — the honest answer may be a different form factor rather than this one.

Scanning: Camera Versus Scan Engine

The 5 MP autofocus camera decodes 1D and 2D codes in software. For printed labels — shelf labels, product barcodes, parcel labels — that is fast enough and it is the reason the device can work without a dedicated scan head.

For codes displayed on a phone screen — digital coupons, wallet passes, ticket QR codes — camera-based decoding is slower and more sensitive to screen brightness and angle than a purpose-built imaging engine. If screen-code scanning is the main workload, tell us: a handheld with a dedicated 2D engine, or a separate scanner paired by Bluetooth, will be less frustrating at the counter than a camera-only device.

Connectivity: Bands, and the One Question to Ask

The radio set covers GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (B2/3/5/8), WCDMA B1/2/5/8 and FDD-LTE B1/2/3/5/8, plus 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 3.0/4.0 with BLE, GPS, and a Type-C port with OTG.

Those LTE bands cover Europe, most of Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America. They do not cover the full North American band set — a US carrier deployment typically needs B4/B12/B13/B66 as well, and a device without them will fall back to slower service or no service at all. If you are deploying in North America, send us the carrier and the region before ordering; band support is a hardware decision, not a setting.

Dual SIM is not the point here — a single SIM plus Wi-Fi covers the normal case, with the SIM providing the wide-area link and Wi-Fi preferred when available.

Battery, Sealing and the Working Day

The 5000 mAh removable lithium battery is rated for standby measured in weeks, and for a working day of intermittent scanning and printing. Operating range is −20 °C to 60 °C at 20–85% humidity, with IP54 sealing — protected against dust ingress and splashing water, which is the correct rating for a device used in a kitchen, a warehouse or outdoors under cover. It is not submersible and not drop-rated for a loading dock.

Because the battery is removable rather than sealed, a site can carry spares and swap mid-shift instead of charging the device on a cable while it is in use. For multi-shift operations that is the difference between one device per shift and one device per person.

Where the H62 Fits

• Restaurants and cafés — order at the table, guest check printed at the table.
• Retail queue-busting — a second till that opens in the aisle when the counter backs up.
• Admissions, events and transport — scan, print, hand over.
• Field sales and delivery — 4G, GPS, printed proof of delivery.
• Stock counts and asset audits — scanning and batch sync, where the printer is simply unused.
• Not for high-volume fixed tills — a counter doing 500 transactions a day wants a 15-inch terminal, a drawer and a receipt printer, not a handheld.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the printer take standard 58 mm paper?

Yes — 58 mm thermal roll, 48 mm print width, 203 dpi, up to 90 mm/s. It is the same paper as the 58 mm receipt printers in the range, so a site can stock one roll size across handhelds and counters.

Can it print a logo on the receipt?

Yes, through the ESC/POS-compatible command set. Logos are stored and printed the same way as on the counter printers.

Which Android version should I choose?

Android 8.1 if your app needs Google Play Services; Android 11 if it does not and you want the newer platform. The 11.0 build does not include Google Play.

Can it read QR codes on a customer’s phone?

Yes, but with the caveat above: a camera decodes screen codes more slowly than a dedicated imaging engine. For heavy screen-code scanning, a device with a 2D scan engine is the better tool.

Is it drop-proof or waterproof?

It is IP54 — dust-protected and splash-resistant. It is not waterproof and not rated for drops onto concrete; a protective case is worth specifying for warehouse and outdoor use.

What is the warranty?
