Four 2.5 Gigabit Ports in a 139 mm Box

A mini PC with one network port is a small desktop computer. A mini PC with four 2.5 GbE ports is a router, a firewall, an edge gateway or a small NVR — and that is the entire reason this class of hardware exists.

The DCA-M200 carries four Intel i225-V / i226 2.5 GbE ports alongside an Intel Celeron J4125, in a fanless aluminium case 139 × 126 × 40 mm. It runs Windows, Linux, pfSense or OpenWRT, and it is specified from −15 °C to 50 °C.

Why 2.5 GbE and Not Gigabit

Gigabit Ethernet has been the default for two decades, and it is now the bottleneck in three common situations:

  • Multi-gigabit internet. Consumer fibre packages above 1 Gbps exist in most markets now. A gigabit port caps the whole network at 940 Mbps regardless of what the ISP delivers.
  • LAN transfers. A NAS with 2.5 GbE, a workstation with 2.5 GbE and a switch with 2.5 GbE ports deliver roughly 280 MB/s instead of 110 MB/s. For backups and video editing over the network that is the difference between usable and annoying.
  • Port aggregation without LACP. Two 2.5 G ports give more throughput than two aggregated gigabit ports, without needing a managed switch that supports link aggregation.

The i225-V and i226 controllers are Intel parts with in-kernel support in Linux, FreeBSD (which is what pfSense and OPNsense run on) and Windows. That matters more than the speed rating: cheap 2.5 G ports built on Realtek controllers have a history of driver quirks and instability under sustained load, particularly in router roles. Intel NICs are the reason this unit is credible as a firewall.

What Four Ports Let You Build

Four ports is the number where a single device can replace several:

  • WAN + LAN + two isolated segments. A guest network, an IoT VLAN and a management network, each on its own physical port — isolation without relying on switch configuration.
  • Redundant WAN. Two ISPs on two ports, with failover handled by the router software.
  • Router-on-a-stick plus a DMZ. One port to the switch, one to a server segment that is reachable from outside but cannot reach the LAN.
  • Small NVR. Camera segments on separate ports, so camera traffic never crosses the office network.

Because the ports are independent NICs rather than a switch chip, each can be a separate broadcast domain at layer 2 without any VLAN tagging. For a small site without a managed switch, that is the simplest possible way to segment a network.

The J4125: Enough CPU, and the Right Idle Power

The Intel Celeron J4125 is a 4-core, 4-thread part at 2.00–2.70 GHz with Intel UHD Graphics 600. It is not fast by desktop standards and it is well matched to this role, for two reasons.

Throughput per watt. A router or firewall spends most of its life at low load, and the J4125’s 10 W class TDP means the whole unit can run from a 12 V / 4 A adapter with no fan. A faster CPU would add heat, a fan, and a failure point — in a device that is expected to run continuously for years.

Hardware offload. Routing and firewalling at multi-gigabit rates on this class of CPU depends on NIC offload and, for VPN, AES-NI. The J4125 has AES-NI, which is what makes IPsec and WireGuard usable at line rate rather than pegged at a few hundred Mbps. If your plan is a site-to-site VPN at gigabit, that instruction set is the specification that matters, not the clock speed.

Memory is 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM, 4/8/16 GB, maximum 16 GB. Storage is a single mSATA SSD from 32 GB to 512 GB.

Fanless, and What That Means in Practice

The heat dissipation is a zero-noise passive design in an aluminium alloy case. Aluminium is not decorative here — the case is the heatsink, which is why the specified operating range is −15 °C to 50 °C at 30–98% RH non-condensing.

Three consequences:

  • No fan to fail. In a device running 24/7 for five years, the fan is usually the first component to go, and a seized fan in a sealed box is a thermal failure that looks like a dead unit.
  • No dust ingestion. A fan pulls air — and everything in it — through the case. A passive case in a workshop, a warehouse office or a vehicle does not accumulate a felt mat over the vents.
  • No noise. Relevant if the unit sits in a shop, a clinic reception or a living space rather than a comms cupboard.

The trade is thermal headroom: a fanless J4125 will throttle under sustained all-core load in a 40 °C room. For routing, firewalling and light virtualisation that never happens; for transcoding video it does.

I/O and Expansion

Alongside the four LAN ports: 1 × HDMI (with audio), 1 × VGA, 2 × USB 3.0, 1 × RS232 on the side, 1 × DC input, and a Mini-PCIe slot that takes a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or 4G module.

Two of those are worth calling out. The RS232 port is unusual on a mini PC and is what makes the unit usable as a controller for legacy equipment — a scale, a PLC, a POS peripheral, a serial display. And the Mini-PCIe slot means the device can be a 4G router with a modem module rather than needing a separate LTE router, which is the configuration used in pop-up sites and vehicles.

Power is DC 12 V / 4 A on a 5.5 × 2.5 mm barrel. The BIOS is AMI EFI, and Windows 10 is installed as a trial by default, with Linux, pfSense and OpenWRT supported.

Where the DCA-M200 Fits

  • Firewall and router appliance. pfSense or OpenWRT on four Intel 2.5 G ports.
  • Edge gateway for a retail or hospitality site. Segmentation without a managed switch.
  • Small NVR or camera gateway. Isolated camera segments, low power, fanless.
  • Industrial controller with a serial device. The onboard RS232 is the reason.
  • 4G router. Mini-PCIe modem module for a site with no fixed line.
  • Not for video transcoding or heavy virtualisation. A 10 W fanless part with 16 GB maximum.
  • Not for a machine that needs a discrete GPU. UHD 600 integrated graphics only.

The Industrial Mini PC Range

  • DCA-M100 — Intel N100, DDR4, three display outputs, 2 × GbE, 2 × RS232, watchdog and PXE.
  • DCA-M200 — this unit. J4125, 4 × 2.5 GbE Intel, HDMI + VGA, RS232, Mini-PCIe, −15 to 50 °C.
  • DCA-M300 — the same fanless platform in a vehicle and industrial-terminal configuration.
  • DCA-M400 — 4th to 13th generation Core i3/i5/i7, up to 12 COM ports, GPIO, 9–36 V input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it run pfSense or OPNsense?

Yes. The Intel i225-V / i226 NICs are supported by FreeBSD, and pfSense and OpenWRT are both listed as supported systems.

Why Intel NICs rather than Realtek?

Driver stability under sustained load, particularly in a router role, and in-kernel support in FreeBSD and Linux without out-of-tree drivers.

Is it really silent?

Yes — fanless, with the aluminium case acting as the heatsink. There is no fan and no vent through which dust is drawn.

Does it support a 4G modem?

Yes, via the Mini-PCIe slot, which accepts a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or 4G module.

Can it drive two monitors?

Yes — one HDMI and one VGA output.

What is the warranty?

One year. OEM/ODM configuration of CPU, ports, logo, colour and system image is available — ask at quotation stage.

Next step: tell us the role (firewall, edge gateway, NVR, controller), the port count and whether 4G or serial is needed — we will confirm the configuration and quote factory-direct. Email sales@dcapos.com or contact us.
