The Printer Is the Cabling Problem

Walk into a small shop and look under the counter: a terminal, a separate receipt printer, a power strip with four adapters, a USB cable, a printer’s power lead, a drawer lead into the back of the printer, and a scanner hanging off the front. Every one of those cables is a failure point, and every one of them has to be re-made when the counter is moved.

The DCA-KSA removes most of it by putting the printer inside the terminal. It is a 15.6-inch Android POS with a built-in 58 mm or 80 mm thermal printer, an auto cutter, a cash drawer port on RJ11, and options for a 2D scanner, NFC, a webcam and speakers.

Built-In Printer: What Changes

The printer is direct thermal with a 50 km print head rating and an auto cutter. It communicates over LPT rather than USB, which matters because LPT is a raw parallel channel — the print data goes straight to the mechanism without a USB stack or a driver negotiation in between, and it is the interface most POS applications and Android print SDKs expect for an integrated printer.

The two width options decide how the terminal is used:

• 80 mm — 79.5 ± 0.5 mm paper, 72 mm printable width, 100 mm/s. The standard shop receipt with 48 characters per line, an itemised layout and a logo. Choose this if the receipt has to look like a retail receipt.
• 58 mm — 57.5 ± 0.5 mm paper, 48 mm printable width, 85 mm/s. Roughly 32 characters per line. Appropriate for an order slip, a queue ticket or a short receipt, and it uses less paper and less power.

What integration buys in practice:

• One power lead. The printer is powered from the terminal’s 12 V supply, so there is no second adapter and no second socket.
• No printer cable. The most common counter fault — a USB printer that re-enumerates and changes port — disappears, because there is no external port.
• A smaller footprint. The printer no longer occupies counter space beside the terminal, which in a small-format shop is the whole argument.

The trade is serviceability: an integrated printer cannot be swapped for a spare in five minutes. Ask about the mechanism’s replacement procedure and expected life at quotation stage if the site is high-volume — a 50 km head at 400 receipts a day is roughly four years, which is normally longer than the terminal’s service life, but a 600-receipt site should plan for it.

The Cash Drawer Goes Into the Terminal

An RJ11 drawer port is fitted, on the Windows build as an option and on the Android RK3568 build as standard with a second RJ11 from the printer port also available.

This matters more than it sounds. On a conventional setup the drawer is triggered by the printer, so a printer fault stops the drawer opening and the till stops working. With the port on the terminal, the drawer trigger comes from the application rather than the print job, which decouples the two. Confirm the drawer’s solenoid voltage against the port before wiring — 12 V and 24 V drawers are both common and the connector is an RJ11 either way.

Options That Make It a Complete Register

Four options turn the terminal into everything a counter needs, and they can be specified individually:

• 2D barcode scanner — built in, supporting 1D and 2D codes. That covers product barcodes, phone-screen payment codes and QR coupons without an external scanner or a USB port.
• NFC reader — for loyalty cards, staff badges and contactless membership, at 13.56 MHz.
• Web camera on top of the display — for identity capture, video calls to a support desk, or a self-service kiosk with remote assistance.
• 4 Ω / 5 W internal speakers — for order confirmation, prompts and queue announcements, without an external speaker on the counter.

An optional side MSR is also available for magnetic stripe cards, which is still the format for many loyalty and gift card programmes.

The Platform

Android 11 on a Rockchip RK3566 at 1.8 GHz or RK3568 at 2.0 GHz (RK3399 optional), with 2 GB of DDR4 on board and a 4 GB option, and 16 GB eMMC with a 32 GB option. Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0/4.0 are supported, and there is a TF card slot.

I/O covers six USB ports, one RJ45 at 10/100 Mbps, one RS232, mic in and audio out, and on the Windows J4125 configuration a VGA output and an optional HDMI or COM choice.

Six USB ports on an all-in-one is generous, and it is deliberate: even with a built-in printer and scanner, sites still attach a keyboard, a scale, a second display adapter and a payment terminal.

The display is a 15.6-inch 1366 × 768 panel at 250 cd/m² with 150°/140° viewing angles under multi-point projected G+G capacitive touch. A 15.6, 14 or 11.6-inch sub-display is available with or without touch, and a 2 × 20 VFD customer display can be mounted on the back cover.

Physical and Power

Plastic and metal combined, in white or black with an orange or blue frame. Net 5.6 kg and gross 7.7 kg for a 15.6-inch dual-screen build without the printer, packed at 340 × 450 × 480 mm; a two-in-one carton at 700 × 460 × 500 mm and 17 kg gross is available for a full register.

Power is a 110–240 V adapter with DC 12 V / 5 A output (a different rating is used for the 80 mm printer configuration — confirm at order). Mains leads are available for US, EU, UK and custom types. Compliance covers FCC Class A, CE, LVD and CCC. Operating range 0–40 °C at 10–80% RH.

Where the DCA-KSA Fits

• Small-format shops with no counter space to spare. Printer inside the terminal, one power lead.
• Quick-service and coffee counters. 80 mm receipt with an integrated cutter.
• Sites that want no external peripherals. Built-in 2D scanner, NFC, webcam and speakers.
• Cash-heavy sites. Drawer port on the terminal rather than the printer.
• Not where the printer has to be swappable in minutes. An external printer is the right choice for a high-volume site that cannot tolerate the terminal being out of service.
