Labelling Where the Label Is Needed

Most labels are printed in an office and carried to where they are applied. That works when the label content is known in advance, which is most of the time — and fails completely for the cases where it is not: a price change noticed on the shelf, a markdown decided at the counter, an asset tag applied to a machine that is already installed, a specimen labelled in a room across the building.

The POS-5816 is a 58 mm portable label printer for those cases: 350 g, USB-C and Bluetooth 4.0, TSPL and ESC/POS, printing label stock from 20 to 50 mm wide on a battery.

Label Detection Is What Separates It From a Mini Receipt Printer

A receipt printer assumes continuous paper: it feeds, it prints, you tear. A label printer has to find the start of each label, or the print lands across the gap.

This unit carries both black-mark detection and label (gap) detection, which is exactly the capability that makes it a label printer rather than a small receipt printer with a TSPL licence. In use:

  • Gap detection finds the space between die-cut labels, so each label is printed in register even after the roll has been changed or the cover opened.
  • Black-mark detection reads a printed bar on the reverse of continuous stock, which is how label rolls that are not die-cut are positioned.

Without those two sensors a portable printer can only print on continuous stock, and a “label” becomes a receipt cut to length — which is not the same thing when the label has a fixed die-cut size and a barcode that must be straight.

20 to 50 mm: The Narrow End Is the Point

The paper width range is 20–50 mm on rolls up to 50 mm diameter, 0.06–0.20 mm thick. Narrow widths are what a portable label printer is for:

  • Shelf-edge and price labels. 30–40 mm wide, one or two lines of text plus a barcode.
  • Markdown and reduced-to-clear labels. Printed at the point of decision rather than in the back office.
  • Asset and equipment tags. Printed and applied in the same visit.
  • Specimen and sample labels. Small, printed where the sample is taken.
  • Visitor and event badges. 50 mm wide stock, printed at the desk.

The 0.20 mm thickness ceiling is the one limit worth knowing: some synthetic and laminated label stocks exceed it, and a printer rated to 0.20 mm will jam on them. Standard paper labels are comfortably inside the range.

Command Languages: TSPL and ESC/POS

TSPL is the label language and the reason the unit works with existing label software: most Android label apps, warehouse systems and shipping tools emit TSPL. ESC/POS is present for plain receipt output, so the same device can print a receipt if the workflow needs one.

Native barcode generation covers 1D symbologies plus QR and PDF417, printed by the printer rather than sent as an image. On a narrow label that distinction is critical: a bitmap barcode compressed onto 30 mm of paper comes out with bars a fraction of a millimetre off, and a scanner reads it intermittently. A natively generated symbol is dimensionally correct.

Print speed is 50–90 mm/s at 203 dpi. The range matters on battery: lower speed draws less current, so a long labelling session can be run slower to extend the charge, and a short one can be run at full speed.

The Battery and the Alarms

A 1,500 mAh rechargeable battery charged from DC 5 V / 2 A over USB-C. That is a modest pack, and the honest reading is that this is a device for a labelling session, not a full shift of continuous printing — a few hundred narrow labels per charge is the realistic expectation, less if the labels are dense.

Two alarms matter more than the capacity figure:

  • Paper-out detection. The printer stops and tells you, instead of printing blank labels into the mechanism.
  • Low-battery detection. It warns before it dies, which on a portable device is the difference between finishing the shelf and walking back for a charger.

USB-C charging is the practical detail: the same cable as a phone, so a charger is never far away, and the unit can run from a power bank in the field.

Physical and Volume

122 × 88 × 62 mm at 350 g including accessories — small enough to hold in one hand while the other hand applies the label, which is the ergonomic requirement that a portable label printer either meets or does not.

Packing is 40 units per carton at 15 kg, which is a compact pack for a device with a battery and a mechanism. For a distributor or an OEM programme, 40 per carton keeps freight per unit low.

Where the POS-5816 Fits

  • In-aisle price and markdown labelling. Printed where the decision is made.
  • Asset tagging and field labelling. Applied on site, in one visit.
  • Small-format labels. 20–50 mm stock with a natively printed barcode.
  • Android and iOS apps that emit TSPL. Bluetooth 4.0 pairing.
  • Not for wide labels. 50 mm maximum paper width — an 80 mm portable unit is needed for 4-inch stock.
  • Not for thick synthetic stock. 0.20 mm maximum thickness.
  • Not for a full shift of continuous printing. 1,500 mAh is a session battery.

The Portable Range

  • POS-5816 — this unit. 58 mm portable label, USB-C and Bluetooth 4.0, 20–50 mm paper, 1,500 mAh, 350 g.
  • POS-8007 — 80 mm label, 72 mm print width, 20–80 mm paper, 2,600 mAh, TFT status display.
  • POS-8008 — 80 mm mini, ESC/POS, TSPL and CPCL, 30–72 mm paper, cover-open alarm.
  • POS-5811 — 58 mm portable receipt printer, 2,000 mAh, 120 rolls per charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it print barcodes?

Yes — 1D symbologies plus QR and PDF417, generated natively by the printer so the bar widths are exact.

Does it need a phone app?

It needs software that emits TSPL or ESC/POS over Bluetooth. That can be a label app, a warehouse app or a custom integration.

How many labels per charge?

A few hundred narrow labels on a 1,500 mAh pack, depending on label density and print speed. Lower speed settings extend the session.

What label stock does it take?

20–50 mm wide, 0.06–0.20 mm thick, on rolls up to 50 mm diameter. Die-cut or black-mark stock.

Does it detect when the paper runs out?

Yes, paper-out and low-battery detection are both fitted.

What is the warranty?

12 months minimum. OEM branding, packaging and pre-set command language available.
